Rise up...how to get started with your idea

Thinking of a new business idea? Wanting to get involved in a new sport? Looking at a new creative pursuit? Starting something new can be challenging. You can never be certain of how it will turn out. Having the courage to take the first step into unknown territory can sometimes prove very difficult.

Often when we want to start something new a few things happen.

  1. The idea continually arises to in your thoughts. These ideas are not just random, one-off thoughts, they continue to surface in your imagination.
  2. You feel so passionate about the idea that you brainstorm in your mind how it will work, what it will involve and visualize what the outcome will look like.
  3. The environment gives you signals. Perhaps your friends of family make comments or suggestions about something you have been thinking about, you might continually see magazine articles or blog posts on this topic.
You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step.
— Martin Luther King Jr.

Great ideas pop into our heads all the time and our imagination can run wild with these very thoughts and often does. Until we start hearing questions like 'What if it doesn't work?', 'What if I'm not good at it?', 'What will other people think of me?', 'I'm not good enough', 'I don't have the time.' This is called 'noise' or 'ego'. A powerful force that will keep us in our comfort zone if we can not recognize this and move beyond it. So often we shoot ourselves down before we have even had a chance to try.

Now we find our self in the strange place, such a great idea that we can't stop thinking about. Yet so many unanswered questions, what if this...?, what if that...? So many people can't move past this phase.

What are the next steps?

Firstly, ask yourself what is it that you really want to do and why? Why is this idea so important to you? What will it help you be, do or have? Listen to your intuition aka your gut feeling. Does it excite you? Does it feel right?

Next, don't get caught up in the details, stop getting ready to get ready and decide NOW to get started. Many of us often find our self in this cycle, it can look a little this... your thinking of starting a blog and you have so many wonderful ideas and messages you would like to share, but you can't think of the right name, the right font, the right colours or the logo you will use. Or maybe you're looking to start a health transformation but you don't have the right running shoes or exercise wear your would like, you're looking for the right training partner or you'll just wait until after the weekend or after this event or that event. I recommend to start from where you are, and start now. You can always change course later if it doesn't work out, but once you have taken the first step the universe will start aligning things in your favor.

Finally take the action steps that will move you forward. You may have a big grand idea or a goal that you are wanting to achieve, Wonderful! Write it down, along with all your ideas about it. Every time you think of something else to do with this idea, add it to your list. Now think about what action steps you can do that will start to move you. Think of 3 things that you can do this week to get started and most importantly commit to doing them. Move yourself from imagination to action. Continue each week with action items and you will start seeing your ideas come to fruition.

The hardest part can be from moving from imagination to action. We often know exactly what we need to do but we just cant do it. Break it down into small bite size pieces, think about why you are doing this and how it will make you feel, use this as motivation to get into action.

Above all else enjoy the process.
