Conversations with Wanderlusters...Interview series.
Join me as I wonder into the lives and minds of Wanderlusters. They share with me their travel stories, navigating their return home and stepping into an inspired adventures life.
Daniela Andaloro spent 16 years travelling and living between Australia and Europe. She is a believer in the Law of Attraction and manifesting all of her heart's wishes. For over a year now, she has broken away from the rat race in order to live her freedom lifestyle which she is currently still working on perfecting.
Her last adventure was for 5 months from May until October 2017. It was the first time she had been overseas. It was the first time she had been overseas not working or staying put to live like a local. Just purely travelling around Western Europe in order to reconnect with herself and heal her broken soul.
What were the Stand out moments of your travels?
I went overseas to 'get over' a relationship. I knew the beauty of Europe would heal me and it did. On my travels I met and truely connected with a French man, yet in the end it did not work out. I am in the process of editing my manuscript of my adventure and heartbreak so I turned the lowlight into a highlight!
I got to see Lake Bled and experience the French Lavender fields and had the opportunity to spend a month along the French Riviera which was a dream come true. A place which I believe is truly magical.
What challenges did you face when returning home?
I had changed but everyone else was the same. I felt like I took a step backwards; back home living with the parents whilst I figured out how to earn a full time income without going back to the rat race. Trying to keep the faith alive with my French man but having to face the reality of letting him go and moving on.
I felt like no one understood me and as if I was going through everything on my own, changing my lifestyle, changing my mentality, becoming vegan. I felt like my calling was to live six months Australia and six months Europe due to family and friends I had over there. I was living two lives and I needed the balance of both in order to ever feel truly happy. Therefore when I am in Europe I miss out on things going on in family and friend's lives in Australia and vice versa.
What emotions and feelings did you experience upon returning home?
I faced lots of negativity, most likely because I did not want to return home and instead stay in France and make it work with my French man. After all who wants to return home "back to reality" after having an amazing five month adventure? When I quit my job in 2017 after being there for 3 years, I was burnt out and promised myself never to get into that situation again. Since being back I have had two temp full time jobs and I felt so out of alignment and like I was going against what I had promised myself. I am still in the process of "starting over" and finding my "service to others."
What strategies did you use to move through this phase after returning home?
It took me a long time to finally get into gear, when my depressive state was getting out of hand. I found a Law of Attraction Planner that pretty much saved me and helped put my goals and where I wanted to be, into a clear process. I can see and believe where it was that I wanted to be however I am not there yet. This Planner helped me to start meditating in the early morning along with 20 minutes of positive affirmations followed by reading out loud my life statement whilst holding my crystals. Most mornings I do yoga stretches which goes for about 20 minutes and can see how all this has a positive affect.
How did your travels inspire your next steps?
My trip was to help heal and reconnect with myself and my passions (which is travel). I had time to start writing a book and look into online business ideas. Since I have been back, I finished writing my book and have edited it a few times. I created some t-shirt designs and am now looking into another business idea. This is what I needed to focus on and be proud of instead of all the negative things from my past. Despite feeling like I had taken a step backwards, I actually did all the things I wanted to do.
Your biggest lesson learned from travels and returning home?
Follow your own path and listen to your intuition. Everyone has an opinion but only you know what is best for yourself. I learned how strong I am and how much stronger and wiser I become after heartbreak. People come and people go in your life, even the ones you truly want to stay in your life. It's about forgiving yourself and others in order to let go of attachments and find the inner peace in order to move on with your life. Despite all my heartbreak, I choose love and to be love every single day!
What mindset shifts changed for you after travel and returning home?
That anything is possible. I believe in myself a lot more and I believe that dreams do come true. Even when negativity came back, I still fought it and have not given up on myself and my big dreams. I have become more compassionate and empathetic and therefore within a month of being back I became vegan. I focused on my creative projects and made that my priority over having to go back to full time work.
What advice would you give others to prepare for re-entry/reverse culture shock?
Everyone and everything will be the same whilst something inside of you will have changed. Stay strong and keep believing in yourself. Only you know your life story and your experiences, don't let anyone bring you back down to their level.
