Its that time of year...
When I sat down to write this blog post, the topic I had envisaged writing about was about 'setting yourself up for 2018', 'Getting a head start on your goals so you could launch into the new year.' But no words were flowing to me.
This is the time of year where everyone starts to get ready for the next year. It’s what everyone’s talking about. Right? Planning for the new year, goal setting, preparing for the next 12 months ahead. No doubt you will start to hear more and more about goal setting, New Year’s resolutions and how to get what you really want in 2018. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, just because it’s a new year, won’t automatically change your habits. So be careful on how you buy into this idea. Sure there’s a bit of special energy that comes with this time of year. Changing habits requires a change in mindset and a shift in perception, not simply a new year.
Adventures await...if you choose them.
If there is one thing I can offer to you... it’s a shift in perception, some fresh playful energy in your life. I want you to get excited about 2018, to fill it up with adventures, travel and fun times. So I'm here to tell you to plan your play! So often we think about going on that that road trip, overseas holiday, weekend getaway or simple afternoon adventure. Yet so often it seems harder to execute than it sounds. So what can you do?
Design your adventures for 2018!
What do I mean by that? I want you to step into the the most amazing year of your life. You have been put on this planet to LIVE your life, not to be consumed by your job, stuck in busy mode or always living your life for others. There is time for you, I promise you this. Here are some simple steps to help you get started. Trust me, this will be fun.
List your adventures.
Start with a thought download. Grab a blank piece of paper and a pen, set the timer for five minutes and using these questions to spark your creativity, write whatever comes to mind...don’t limit yourself, write down anything and everything.
- What places would love to escape to, travel or holiday?
- What hobbies have always dreamed of starting but never had the time?
- An activity you would like to try?
- Something you want to learn?
- A creative passion you might be good at?
- A new way of thinking you could adopt?
After five minutes, it’s likely you will have a big list of wonderful things that light you up, they excite you. So what will you choose? Give yourself another minute to review what you have written and choose the three things that excite you the most. That you can’t wait to get started with.
Now it’s time to map out the fun times. For each of the three adventures you have chosen, brainstorm the action steps to set these adventures in motion. Then order these steps in a logical progression and start putting them onto a timeline for your year. Mark them on your calendar before anything else. Every day look at what you can do to move closer to that adventure.
Plan your play first so you can feel excited about living out what you really want for 2018. Put these adventures on your calendar and mark them a priority. I challenge you to show up for these exciting projects just as you show up for your job or your family. After all ‘living’ is what we are here to do, we may as well give it our best shot!
If you're reading this thinking... I’ll do this activity later or tomorrow or next week or over the holiday season.... let's be real, you’re probably not going to do it at all! Allow yourself 10 minutes to start turning your dreams into reality. Keep them front of mind and make 2018 the year of adventures you deserve.
