Have you been travelling the world for the 6-12 months, 2, 3, 5 years? Or perhaps you've been living and working in another country? The time has come to return home...the departure date has crept up on you and your time overseas is coming to an end? OR...Perhaps you have just arrived home or been home for a few months now. Chances are by now you've heard about the dreaded reverse culture shock and are maybe even experiencing it. You know that feeling when you come home and just don't feel like you belong? Your lost, stuck or just don't relate anymore.
A friend of mine looked me dead in the eyes and said: "You have the most amazing life." I froze as my eyes glassed over with tears and my face started to burn. "Every time I see what you're doing your adventuring somewhere new, climbing mountains, jumping off waterfalls or hanging out at the beach." Still frozen as the lump in my throat almost blocked off my airways. I had no response....she was absolutely right.
Isn't it easy to lose yourself in this world? Now even more so than 10 or 20 years ago. We live in the age of information where anything we want to know is at the end of our fingertips, quite literally. Social media lets us peer into the lives of so many. Comparison is easy, judgment is easier as we really are only perceiving the world with our own eyes and thoughts and creating a story around what we choose to focus on.
When we go to work on ourselves, its important to be open to the road ahead. Normally one would relate 'working on yourself' or 'growing as a person' to getting better, whatever better looks like? Happier, a more fulfilling life, openness and more opportunities. But the road forward its not always as clear cut as we first think. Remembering that we have both a light side and a shadow side.
I've always thought of my life as a roller coaster. I feel like I've experienced incredible highs, along with horrible lows. But my life is just a series of events, label them what you wish...good, bad, ugly. I bet everyone would perceive them in a different manner. What is a roller coaster are my emotions, brought on by my perception of these moments….
