What do you remember? Most likely the first thing that springs to mind are the amazing destinations you have visited, the people that you meet, the sites that you saw and the incredible jaw dropping moments you never could have imagined. You think about all the wonderful stories and the incredible moments.
As I started talking more and more about Reverse Culture Shock, I also realised that some of my thoughts and ideas were getting entangled with Post Travel Blues. I started using these words interchangeably, however I soon realised that they are not the same thing. In fact they are very very different. We can start by looking at the meaning of both. I found these definitions.
Returning home from travelling, living or simply holidaying abroad can leave you with a wide range of mixed emotions. From unsettled and sad to excited and happy to confused and lost. There are so many different reasons you might be feeling this way. Perhaps it’s a result of the awareness and experiences you had if a different culture, a shift in mindset and perception, a realisation of how different developing nations are compared to the western world, seeing poverty and people live with very little.
As much as I believe that travel is super valuable and leaves you with some incredible learnings and growth and some wonderful habits, it can also develop some bad habits. Habits that would be a good idea to break.
If you are or have been travelling for a long period of time and return home, you might find you have unconsciously adopted some of these bad habits.
Travel teaches us to grow, expand and see things from a different perspective. Seeing new cultures, different people and going to a place you have never been before is enough to spark inspiration. New ideas come flooding in, insightful ways of how to live, contribute and be a better person. Deep seeded beliefs can start to break down and thought change as the world opens the mind to see different points of view and a perspective that seems more true to our self.So how do you take that and turn it into action, reality and a lifestyle change that will impact your life and the world around you?
