THE WANDERLUSTERS MIND PODCAST

Stop pursuing happiness and start living it now.

So many people lead themselves to believe that happiness (success, joy, love) is in the future and they become addicted to chasing that feeling. How would you know if you're pursuing happiness instead of living it. Think about these questions...

Life is about the journey, not the destination. Cure destination addiction and the PURSUIT of happiness.

β€œBeware of destination addiction, a preoccupation with the idea that happiness is in the next place, the next job or with the next partner. Until you give up the idea that happiness is somewhere else, it will never be where you are.”
— Robert Holden

Are you PURSUING happiness or are you actually LIVING it?

So many people lead themselves to believe that happiness (success, joy, love) is in the future and they become addicted to chasing that feeling. How would you know if you're pursuing happiness instead of living it? Think about these questions...

  • Is there always a 'pinnacle event' on your calendar that you are looking forward too more so than anything else?
  • Do you always feel busy?
  • After a big exciting event in your life, do you fall into a mild sense of depression that you can't shake?
  • Do you have so many plans, forecasts, projections about what you want for your future, but you're not enjoying the process of bringing them to life?

Falling into these ways of thinking and living can be so easy especially if we are not aware that we are doing so. You must learn to stop placing everything that makes you happy in your future and outside of your control.

How can you cure destination addiction and the PURSUIT of happiness?

I'll be the first person to tell you that I still fall into the destination addiction trap from time to time. As with any addiction, I believe it all begins with regaining control of your mindset. So Here are some actions that I have applied to my life to help me feel happy NOW!

  • Apply personal daily practices to help get present. E.g. Active stretching routine, meditation, exercise, get into nature.
  • Think and FEEL about what in your life excites you right NOW?
  • Tune in to what is actually going on for you in your life right now.
  • Create awareness around your thoughts and actively choose a positive mindset for yourself. Choose to feel happy for no reason.
  • Stop placing your happiness in things external to yourself...your relationship, your job or your next exciting holiday. Just create it now - it is a choice.
  • Consciously set your day up for happiness and success.

Remember you always have a choice on how you show up. Your situation in life may not be picture perfect or your ideal. Let go of that mindset and start focusing in on your life and how you can be and feel happy now.

Drop the idea that happiness and success is something that will come to you at the end of the road, the top of the mountain, when the championship rolls around when you reach that goal, that next holiday or you finally nail that job you wanted.

Why you should never stop travelling.

The world has so much to offer...

Travel continually teaches us to grow and evolve. I say continually because sometimes we don't learn the lessons the first time round, or we don't fully pick them up and adopt them, or we lose them.

The world has so much to offer so here are 5 reasons why you should never stop travelling.

β€œTravelling is the only thing you buy that makes your richer.”

The world has so much to offer...

Travel continually teaches us to grow and evolve. I say continually because sometimes we don't learn the lessons the first time round, or we don't fully pick them up and adopt them, or we lose them.

Common lessons and learnings that people say they have gained from travel are to have an open perspective on life, how to be flexible, adaptable and capable of doing things you thought you couldn't do, how to be resourceful and look within rather than outside yourself to get something done and that travel teaches us that life is to be enjoyed and to choose an adventure.

5 reasons to never stop travelling

  1. Travelling is unknown, NEW and thats exciting….There is always a new place to go, new people to meet and new cultures to experience.
  2. Travelling helps you to continually dive into curiosity and playfulness.
  3. Travelling is fun, rich and creates lasting memories.
  4. Travel disrupts the mundane routine
  5. Finally (might sum up the last 4 points) Travelling offers us an opportunity for growth, learnings, lessons and expansion.

Are you glorifying your travel memories?

How do you look back on your travel memories? The common thread is that you remember the good times. Most of the time, you forget the rest. The seemingly β€˜bad’ and β€˜challenging’ times turn into moments of β€˜overcoming challenges’ and you look upon these with a positive outlook. On occasions I believe you glorify these memories. Making these memories seem even more amazing than they actually were, attaching the strongest and most amazing emotions to them.

The unrealistic stories and emotions we connect to travel to make it seem 'better' than where our life is at right now!

β€œNever let your feelings get in the way of seeing things as they truely are.”

The reason is this is important to RECOGNISE is that there are some instances, such as Reverse Culture Shock, experiencing Post Travel Blues or your in a time where your unable to travel but you want to...maybe its a stage of life that your in so it can be unhealthy to look at our memories this way. Making us feel worse about our present situation.

Thinking of travels or any situations for that matter, can lead to β€œglorification” to the point we envy our past.

SO...Perhaps nothing good and nothing bad?I believe that in life you experience emotions 50% what you label β€˜positive’ and 50% what you label β€˜negative.’

The opposite is also true. You can also dramatise the negativity of a situation. Stating how awful and horrible it was and deep diving into these emotions. Painting this time in a far worse light than it actually was

It's up to you how you see a situation, look at what you gained from it? The challenge that you faced, the wonderful time that you had. Just don't over glorify it and make it something that it wasn't. Especially if your working through a tough stage of your life, it will only make things more challenging for you.

When coming home...

  • Emotions Travis expects to face when he returns home - Knows that this is where the lessons will come. Curious to see what will happen but feels connected to his new home. Exciting.
  • How Travis maximises his mindset - Building courage like a warrior. Being conscious of your fears and how they are holding you back. Take responsibility for your life and your mind.
  • 3 most important lessons that travel has taught you.
  1. Step and be open to change....You're never stuck. "If you do not change as you go, you will not arrive at yourself."
  2. Have an open mind.
  3. Dont ask what you can make money at....ask yourself what would you do it happiness paid the bills then figure out how to make money doing that.
  • Advise for those wanting to not die with un-lived adventure inside them. - Ask yourself what is the big question that you are going to ask on your death bed, what is the answer that you want to hear to those questions? Choose to live in alinement with those answers not tomorrow but today.

Igniting friendships when returning home from travel.

One of the hardest things, I found when returning home from long term travel was re-establishing my friendship circles. There was a mixture of old friends, plus new ones and other friends I was meeting along the way. There were often times when I so desperately wanted to meet with an old friend and it just take off from where we left off, but instead I found that I was the one, pushing and driving and hoping the friendship would be the same, when it was never going to be that way, it had taken a new path.

One of the hardest things that so many people face I when returning home from long term travel is re-establishing my friendship circles.

β€œPeople come into our life for a reason, a season or a lifetime, when you figure out which it is, you will know exactly what to do.”

What I have learned when reconnecting with old friends.

APPROACH EACH FRIEND WITH ENTHUSIASM AND A β€˜PICK UP WHERE YOU LEFT OFF’ MENTALITY.

  • Be the one to actively approach and reach out to old friends to arrange to catch up.
  • Be interested in what they have been doing with their life as well as sharing your story.

RELEASE EXPECTATIONS ABOUT HOW YOUR RELATIONSHIPS β€˜SHOULD’ BE.

  • Relationships may now be different closer or more distance depending on what has changed.
  • The friendship doesn't have to be the same as it was.
  • Acknowledge you have changed.
  • Your friends may have changed or they may not have, both is ok.

CONTINUE TO SEEK NEW FRIENDS IN YOUR OLD HOME.

  • Like on your your travels don’t let go of this skill just because you are now at home.
  • Seek like minded people though community and events.
  • Be the one to go first even if it feels out of your comfort zone
